a little bit of everything.

{view from dorotea : by me}
The sun is shining in Puerto Natales, and has been (mostly) for a few days. Yesterday I went out in only  a sweater. Cold when the wind picked up, but I warmed myself walking. Over the weekend we hiked in similar sunshine around Cerro Dorotea, about 10 minutes driving from Puerto Natales. If the weather was like this all the time (at least for one straight season), it would make living here so much more agreeable.

But there are other beautiful things. (Because it's better not to focus on what might drive one nuts.) Like the kindness of so many friends. We have already received lots of baby clothes, the second big installment came yesterday over hot chocolate and sweet chat. Another friend even gave me one of her son's hand-knitted sweaters, despite my protestations (amid gratitude). She swore that he had lots of handmade clothes and more waiting for him in Australia, where she's from originally.

We have been getting our paperwork together for S's visa interview in Santiago. This round of papers was so much easier than round one! We should pretty much finish everything today. Then off to the capital to again for doc appointments, errands, this interview, some shopping and good food.

This has been a long, difficult winter for me (I won't lie), and I welcome the coming phases, wherever they take us. For now I'm enjoying the transition into spring. Waking up from that dark hibernation that was only sometimes restful. More and more friends are returning from their winter travels into summer. The shops, all closed up for the past several months, open their doors. Trekkers shoulder their backpacks, folding and refolding their maps and dogeared travel books, looking for a place to stay or drink coffee + beer. The influx of life comforts me.

Have you ever lived in a place that closes down for certain seasons? What would you do during your hibernation?

Absolutely gorgeous -- what a view and how wonderful to be in that scenery! I could write all day long!

I don't think I'd be good with a place closing down for a season--I'd go crazy! By this point, I'm too much of a city girl (despite my roots).

So beautiful...perhaps in the future you will look back on your hibernation with more understanding, since this season you have been creating such a masterpiece :).

Beautiful photos. I don't think I can imagine living in a place that closes down like that ~ I need civilization too much.

I am a city girl too and I am not sure what I would do in different surroundings. I live on the waterfront and all the boating/marina stuff shuts down after Labour Day...but then the ice rink opens up!

Sending you the last of our rays to get you through the beginning of your spring.

Hello, first timer over on your blog. So glad you left a comment over on Free Honey to lead me here! The views on your hike are absolutely breathtaking. I really enjoy hiking, but don't go nearly as often as I'd like. If I had views like this I'd go all the time. Amazing!

Those photos are really amazing. What a blessing to live someplace that is so breathtaking (even if it does shut down part of the year!!)
I've never lived in a place that shuts down though... I'm afraid I'd go a little bit stir crazy. So glad hibernation is almost over for you.

nice to meet you, by the way. :)

On our honeymoon, my husband and I took a road trip to Colorado and wound our way through the small towns of Ouray, Silverton, and Durango (which is a bit bigger). We stopped to eat lunch in Silverton and only had one option as only one place was open! The town practically hibernates during the snowiest months. It seemed cozy to us outsiders, but I am sure that it would take some getting used to.

Hey thanks for the comment over on my blog. Yep, I can tell by your last name that your hubby is Turkish! :)

Living in chile, eh? You guys are world travelers!

I can't begin to imagine having to close down for a season...not that we have to do that here. But I think a bit of hibernation is good for the soul, as long as it doesn't last too long!

It'd be difficult being in a place that closes down for a season (there's only 1 season here!)
But it's a great time for quiet and books!

Hope his visa interview goes well!

Lovely images, and you are so lucky to have spring now!

And up north in Norway where I grew up the sun is away for about 2 months in midwinter. Yes, we are talking away, as in pitch dark for months.
Guess it does not get much closer to hibernation than that :)

it's always a shock to think of places closing up for long stretches of time. it seems we are a "24/7" nation here in america.

when i lived in europe, most small town shops shut for the month of august, when everyone would skedaddle to the nearest beach. i loved that.

if you should happen to wander by my blog today, i've got something for you. :)

Going into winter I always feel a need for rest, but then midway through become restless for spring and activity. I wonder if bears feel like this??

I've never lived in a place that formally shut down, but boy oh boy in Canada it got nasty and everything shut down anyway!! I was never so happy to leave a place in my life....farewell -40!

Carrie
